Nació en Saltos (Uruguay) el 31 de diciembre de 1878. Fue escritor precoz y ya en 1897 realiza sus primeras participaciones en diversos periódicos del país.
Estudio en Montevideo y pronto comenzó a interesarse por la literatura. Inspirado en su primera novia escribió ''Una estación de amor'' (1898), fundo en su ciudad natal la Revista de Salto (1899), marcho a Europa y resumió sus recuerdos de esta experiencia en Diario de viaje a París (1900).
En 1902 la fatalidad comienza a visitarlo, mata accidentalmente a un amigo, el escritor Federico Ferrando. Un año antes ya había publicado sus primeros textos modernistas recogidos bajo el titulo ''Los arrecifes de coral''.
En 1903 trabaja como profesor de lengua y acompaña a Leopoldo Lugones por la región Argentina de Misiones haciendo fotografías.
El 19 de febrero de 1937, aparece muerto, por que tomo cianuro al enterarse que sufre de cáncer gástrico.
